A New Adventure, A Larger Purpose: Long Joins Navy Nurse Corps

ST. LOUIS —After more than a decade of caring for others as a nurse, Nikki Long began a new chapter of service Sept. 28, 2026, when she was commissioned as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. Long’s commissioning ceremony was held on the quarterdeck of Headquarters, Navy Talent Acquisition Group Mid America, where Col. Fulton, U.S. Air Force, administered the oath of office. Surrounded by family, Long officially began her journey as a Navy Nurse Corps officer, bringing more than 10 years of nursing experience and a commitment to serving others with her into the Navy. “The foundation of nursing is service to others,” said Long. “I was looking for something new, and what better way to continue that service to others than to join the Navy Nurse Corps?” Long’s connection to military service began long before she took the oath herself. Her father served in the U.S. Air Force, and she said she has always admired her husband Charles’ military service. Charles, also an Air Force veteran, was among the family members present to witness her commissioning, along with their son Chayse and daughters Charlie and August. Although Long’s older son, Charles Jr., and daughter Arianna were unable to attend the ceremony in person, both remained an important part of the milestone. Arianna is also serving in the U.S. Navy, adding another chapter of military service to the Long family. For Long, joining the Navy Nurse Corps offered an opportunity to combine her nursing career with a desire to serve in a larger capacity. “I’m interested in the Navy’s humanitarian missions,” said Long. “I wanted to start this new adventure with something that’s bigger than myself while continuing to serve others.” Long’s nursing experience provides her with a strong foundation as she transitions into military service. Her decision to join the Navy Nurse Corps allows her to continue a career centered on caring for others while contributing to the Navy’s mission and supporting Sailors, Marines and their families. Her commissioning represents more than the beginning of a new professional chapter. It is also a continuation of a family tradition of service from her father and husbands Air Force service to her daughter’s service in the Navy, and now her own commitment to serve as a Navy Nurse Corps officer. With a career already centered on caring for others, Long now begins a new chapter of service, one she hopes will allow her to make an impact beyond herself while continuing to serve others through the Navy.
