US Employers Slash Job Cuts in February

(MENAFN) US-based companies reported 48,307 job reductions in February, marking a 55% decline from the 108,435 cuts recorded in January, according to a report released on Thursday.

This monthly tally also represented a 72% decrease compared with the 172,017 layoffs declared during the same month last year, global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas said.

Across the initial two months of 2026, total workforce reductions reached 156,742, the lowest January-to-February sum since 2022.

Plans to hire during the first two months of the year fell 56% to 18,061, down from the 40,782 plans announced over the same span in 2025.

Andy Challenger, a workplace specialist and chief revenue officer at the firm, mentioned that the February dip offered a “reprieve from elevated layoff plans” observed earlier in the year.

Challenger added that US involvement in a growing conflict in Iran could trigger additional “layoff plans” by the conclusion of the first quarter, as companies tighten spending amid uncertainty.

The technology sector led the reductions with 11,039 announcements in February, bringing its year-to-date total to 33,330, a 51% rise from the previous year.
