36% of Job Seekers Use AI in Their Search, and Half Never Tell Employers
SINGAPORE, Aug. 19, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A Gdoc.io survey of 500 U.S. job seekers found that one in three now uses AI to find work - and receives 40% more job offers as a result. Most would never say so to an employer.
The silence around AI use
The actual uses go well beyond resume writing. Most rely on AI to research positions and customize their materials, but 20% let it submit applications automatically on their behalf. One in ten says AI was feeding them prompts during a live interview. ChatGPT is the tool most reach for, used by nearly four in five AI-assisted job seekers.
A majority (54.2%) say they'd never bring it up with an employer. Only about one in eight always discloses it.
"In 2026, organizations are being flooded with resumes primarily created by AI. The result is that for both the digital screeners and the humans who evaluate resumes, they complain that 'everybody's resume reads the same.' Those job seekers who are relying on AI-generated job search content are now getting – and will continue to get – fewer and fewer interviews. Job seekers who use AI to find best positions to apply to, tailor documents and prepare for interviews will succeed," said John K. Brubaker, professional resume writer and career coach, Professional Resume Plus (est. 1989).
The offer gap
65.9% of AI users landed at least one offer, compared to 46.7% of non-users. AI users got two or more offers at twice the rate: 48% versus 22.7%. Just 9.5% of AI users went without a single interview, against nearly 30% of those who skipped AI entirely.
Gen Z leads at 46.7%, versus 35% of Millennials and 34.5% of Gen X and older.
Why most skip it
64% of job seekers haven't touched AI for their search at all. Ask them why, and the most common answer is that they don't need it. Roughly half say so. Among Gen Z who skipped AI, 54% don't trust the output quality. One in four respondents over 43 say they're not AI-savvy. Across all groups, 85% have either not noticed competitors using it or never thought about it.
"What I advise my clients is: if you're not using AI in a job search, you're massively hurting yourself. Over the next few months and years, we will shift from an environment in which having AI is a potentially positive differentiator to one in which the knowledge of how to strategically and intelligently apply AI technologies to your workflows is going to be essential. People who are not willing to do that are going to be left behind. Change is moving at lightning speed. Every day counts. The present moment is what we all have," said John K. Brubaker.
