Digital dentistry program offers advanced training for new Army, Air Force dentists

New Army dentists in Fort Carson’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program recently partnered with their Air Force peers from the U.S. Air Force Academy’s 10th Dental Squadron for a joint Digital Dentistry Course at Smith Dental Clinic.

Hosted by the Fort Carson Dental Activity, the AEGD program is designed to train competent, productive, efficient clinicians who can skillfully and confidently manage patients requiring complex multidisciplinary treatment. The Air Force dentists who participated are part of a similar Air Force program at USAFA.

“The four-day Digital Dentistry Course provides a comprehensive introduction into the digital dentistry capabilities that exist within both the Army and Air Force AEGD residency program,” said Lt. Col. Christian Petersen, the Fort Carson AEGD assistant program director. “It is specifically designed for recent dental school graduates and first term dental corps officers within their respective residency programs.”

Digital dentistry allows for same-day restorations to be designed, fabricated, and delivered in a shortened clinical timeframe.

“Digital dentistry decreases the need for multiple appointments, communication with off-site dental laboratories, and long processing and fabrication timelines,” Petersen said. Through use of this technology, Soldiers and Airmen spend less time in the dental chair and more time in their primary place of duty, expediting treatment of disease and return to health.”

Throughout the course of their one-year residency program, dental residents will fully incorporate and utilize the digital dentistry capabilities within each of their respective clinics to expertly treat their empaneled patient populations, with the ultimate goal of decreasing treatment timelines, expediting return to duty timeframes, and maximizing readiness generating treatment, Petersen said.

The four-day training includes more than 12 hours of didactic education coupled with 12 hours of hands-on instruction. Students are also exposed to the full array of high-tech dental systems used to design and make custom ceramic and implant restorations in a single dental visit.

The culminating event for the training involves live patient encounters where didactic instruction turns to live clinical application, according to Petersen.

“Dental schools expose students to the possibilities of same-day digital dentistry, but the digital dentistry course aids in standardizing the resident’s digital dentistry education,” Petersen said. “This gives them a common foundation for the rest of their military and dental careers and the necessary tools to be successful and clinically efficient throughout the residency program and at their follow-on duty assignments.”
